How do cavity fillings work?

Cavity fillings involve removing the decayed portion of the tooth and filling the area with a durable material. Dr. Fischman will first numb the area, then clean out the cavity and place the filling material, which could be composite resin, amalgam, or another suitable substance. This process restores the tooth’s structure and function, preventing further decay.

The lifespan of tooth fillings depends on the material used and your oral hygiene habits. Composite resin fillings typically last 5-7 years, while amalgam fillings can last up to 15 years or more. Regular dental checkups and good oral care can help extend the life of your fillings

Should I have tooth sensitivity after a filling?

It is common to experience some tooth sensitivity after getting a filling. This sensitivity can occur when eating hot or cold foods and drinks or even when breathing in cold air. The sensitivity is usually temporary and should subside within a few days to a couple of weeks as your tooth adjusts to the filling. If the sensitivity persists or worsens, contact our office for further evaluation to ensure there are no complications.

Dental sealants can provide effective protection for your teeth for several years, typically around 5-10 years. However, they should be checked regularly during dental visits to ensure they remain intact and are re-applied if necessary to maintain their protective benefits.

Who qualifies for dental sealants?

Dental sealants are most commonly recommended for children and teenagers, as their molars and premolars are more prone to cavities. However, adults without decay or fillings in their molars can also benefit from sealants. Sealants are particularly effective for individuals with deep grooves and pits in their teeth, which are harder to clean and more likely to develop cavities.
