Emergency Dental Care: What to Do When You Can’t Wait

A dental emergency rarely happens at a convenient time. Whether it’s a sudden toothache, a broken tooth, or a knocked-out tooth during a game or fall, acting quickly can make the difference between saving and losing a tooth. Knowing how to respond — and having a trusted dental team ready to help — provides peace of mind when you need it most.

At Nebraska Dental Center, same-day emergency appointments are available to treat urgent dental issues promptly and effectively. Our goal is to relieve discomfort, protect your oral health, and restore your smile as quickly as possible.

What is considered a dental emergency?

Not every dental concern requires immediate care, but some situations should be addressed right away. Common dental emergencies include:

  • Severe or persistent tooth pain

  • A knocked-out (avulsed) tooth

  • A cracked, broken, or chipped tooth causing pain

  • A lost filling or crown

  • Swelling in the gums or face

  • Signs of infection, such as fever or abscess

  • Uncontrolled bleeding in the mouth

If you are unsure whether your situation qualifies as an emergency, it’s always best to call. Prompt guidance can prevent complications.

What to do in a dental emergency

Taking the right steps before you reach the dental office can improve outcomes.

Knocked-out tooth

Handle the tooth by the crown (top), not the root. Rinse it gently with water if dirty, but do not scrub. If possible, place it back into the socket. If that’s not an option, keep it in milk or saliva and seek immediate dental care.

Severe toothache

Rinse your mouth with warm water and gently floss to remove any debris. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gums. Contact our office as soon as possible for evaluation.

Broken or cracked tooth

Rinse your mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. Save any broken pieces if possible and bring them with you.

Lost crown or filling

Keep the area clean and avoid chewing on that side. Temporary dental cement from a pharmacy may help protect the tooth until you’re seen.

Quick action can significantly increase the chances of saving a damaged tooth.

Why same-day emergency care matters

Dental emergencies are not just about discomfort — they can signal infection, structural damage, or underlying issues that may worsen without treatment. Same-day emergency appointments help:

  • Relieve pain quickly

  • Prevent infection from spreading

  • Preserve natural teeth whenever possible

  • Reduce the need for more complex treatment later

Prompt care protects both your oral health and your overall well-being.

What to expect during your emergency visit

During an emergency appointment, the dental team will:

  1. Evaluate your symptoms and take necessary digital images.

  2. Diagnose the underlying issue.

  3. Provide immediate relief, which may include medication, temporary restoration, or treatment.

  4. Discuss next steps if additional care is needed.

Clear communication and compassionate care are essential during urgent situations, especially when patients may be anxious or uncomfortable.

Be prepared before an emergency happens

While accidents can’t always be prevented, you can reduce your risk by:

  • Wearing a mouthguard during sports

  • Maintaining regular dental checkups

  • Addressing small dental issues before they become larger problems

  • Avoiding chewing ice or hard objects

Having an established dental home also ensures that you know exactly who to call when an emergency arises.

Dental emergencies can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to handle them alone. If you think you may have a dental emergency, please call us right away at 402-331-1695 for a same-day appointment.
